I know next to nothing about cameras and they helped me pick a great option for a photoshoot. They were super helpful and responsive over email. I rented for the day on Saturday, but pickup was on Friday and return was on Monday (they aren't open on Sunday) so I had the camera for the whole weekend, which was really convenient.read more

I’ve been coming back to these folks in all my 7 years of filmmaking in Vancouver (after many more elsewhere) and they never skip a beat. Great prices, excellent selection, super helpful and knowledgeable staff. One chap called me minutes after grabbing gear making sure I had enough SSD space on the 3x Atomos for my all day Multicam shoot. I was only recording 1080p ProRes LT, so was well. The care to actually call me on an afterthought is above and beyond!

Staff are extremely helpful in answering questions promptly (e.g. emails are answered within hours and even on days the store is closed), are very knowledgeable about the equipment (e.g. light stand required an extra connector piece to ensure a level camera), and are always looking for options to accommodate the customer's circumstances (e.g. pick up on a Labor Day Monday).

I love buying new cameras but I often regret the purchase because it takes a long time to get to know the camera and see how it works…or doesn't work. And that's when you find out to your horror that you don't like the camera as much as you thought you did. Buyers remorse is a bitter pill.
And that's where Gearbase Camera Rentals comes in to save the day. They rent out a wide variety of camera gear for stills and video, and they happen to carry a camera that I was interested in buying…a GoPro Hero 12.
I had never shot an Action Camera before so I thought to myself… why not rent the GoPro out and see if it lives up to the hype. Kind of like going on a date before you get married.
Gearbase has an office on the 12th floor of a downtown Vancouver highrise called the United Kingdom Building. Although I don't think it has anything to do with the UK government. It's a cool building with a very nice lobby and it's located right beside the Canada Line train station, in case you don't want to drive downtown. There are many elevators in the lobby but the one that goes to the 12th floor always seems to be padded. Probably the freight elevator.
The Gearbase office was packed with gear and quite busy, so it's nice to see that Artificial Intelligence hasn't replaced filmmakers quite yet. Although I suspect that will change soon.
I was helped by a very nice guy named Geoff who set me up with a GoPro Hero 12. He made the whole process seem quick and painless. You need a piece of ID and a credit card to complete the rental process. Geoff and the entire Gearbase team are all very kind and professional.
The rental fee for the GoPro was $60 per day but given the way they start the clock ticking…it was more like two days for $60. I was there on a Monday at 2pm and I had to have the camera back by noon on Wednesday.
The GoPro was in great shape and it came with a pelican case, two batteries, a charger, micro SD card, Miro SD card to SD card adapter, amd few other accessories. Everything I needed and more.
I was testing the camera for vlogging so I just walked around Vancouver and talked to myself. The GoPro handles this task quite well but the screens are very small so it's hard to see yourself clearly for framing and exposure. It appears that Action Cameras aren't really meant for my kind of vlogging. Action Cameras seem to work best when you strap one on and then jump out of a plane. Unfortunately I don't like vlogging quite that much.
On the upside…the GoPro size, weight, stabilization, and durability is perfect for vlogging on the streets of Vancouver. It will definitely handle all the rain that Vancouver has to offer and then some.
I'm glad I was able to rent the GoPro before buying it because I don't think it's the right camera for me. Unfortunately my search for the perfect vlogging camera continues. I just wish Gearbase carried more cameras.read more

My go to place for camera rentals. People here are very professional and their process is very seamless. Never had any issue renting gear. Highly recommended for new photographers and videographers who need to rent gear. Good place to try out gear before buying. The rates are very reasonable. My only gripe is their hours of operation is a bit tight and they are not open on Sundays. I've used Gearbase on several occasions, and they've always had the gear I was looking for, and were great to deal with. Their downtown location close to transit makes it easy to get to and the folks there are always super friendly.
I'm a hobbyist photographer, so I don't always have the budget to spend on top tier glass for special use occasions so renting makes the most sense to me for usage during my travels. Gearbase's prices are reasonable, and I've never had any issues with availability.
They're also very friendly and customer focused - they'll chat about what you're going to be shooting when I've gone to pick up the lenses , and recently was nice enough to waive my cancellation charges for a lens recently due to unforeseen changes to my travels - which they definitely didn't have to do.
I've been more than pleased with Gearbase in the several times I've used them, and will definitely recommend others to come here as well for photo and video gear.read more

I have been renting from Dylan and team for years. I've watched them expand and grow into one of, if not the most reliable and well stocked rental houses in all of Vancouver. Gearbase has a fantastic selection of gear and very competitive pricing, in most cases renting for lower than their competition. The gear itself is usually kept in great shape and I've never really had any issues with renting from them. The only downside is that while the space is very accessible via transit (being right downtown) it can be a pain trying to find parking or accessing the loading bay during busy downtown Vancouver days. Overall, a great place to rent camera/ film gear in downtown Vancouver. Friendly knowledgeable staff for the most part and a long standing tradition as one of the best rental companies you can rent from in the city !read more

110% recommend Gearbase! Even when I was younger and had no money these guys were willing to rent me gear, no major deposit required. Once I paid $35 to rent a sigma 24 1.4 for 3 days, will continue to use this service for ever. There even good for renting a lens to test it for a whole day before you buy. Dylan's rates are great, his service is exceptional, friendly, and informative. I would recommend arriving 20minutes ahead of time as finding the loading bay is difficult by vehicle but easy by foot, it is a very awkward loading access/bay so plan ahead with them if you are renting a medium or large load from them, such as a Truck or Van load.read more

Even though they are a rental business they took the time out of thier busy day to offer to take a look at her camera and helped us diagnose the problem very quickly. Best customer service in the business!!
I rented a Ronin MX and the stabilizer started to vibrate out of control. Without any app support, all my footage had micro jitters and was unusable. It was an inherent problem with the model cause it's brand new and not as stable as the older Ronin M.
Even though it was all a technical failure, the staff gave me a full refund and apologized (as if it was their fault; which it clearly wasn't). I have yet to see such level of customer support from any business so far. Weather you are starting up, hobbyist or a industry pro., you are sure to appreciate their caring service when renting out gears worth thousands of dollars. GearHouse is, hands down, the best rental place in Vancouver.read more

I hired a lens from gear house in December when i was i Vancouver for the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships. I found them via a google search and after deciding I should at least price up hiring lens I contacted them via email for a quote.
The price was fantastic, (5 days for slightly more than the cost of a day in the UK)
Responses to emails were usually within a few minutes during their office hours and they even gave me directions from my hotel via public transport
If I ever need to hire gear in the Vancouver area again this will definitely be my 1st call read more
